The Republic of Maldives or simply known as Maldives is a South Asian archipelago nation situated in the Indian Ocean, southwest of India and Sri Lanka.
The Maldives consists of 26 natural atolls, which are made up of 1,192 coral islands. Known for its stunning white beaches, breathtaking reefs and gorgeous dive sites, Maldives is truly a tropical paradise.
Maldives is formed by 26 natural atolls in the form of islands and some isolated reefs. The word ‘atoll’ comes from the Dhivehi (the language of Maldivians) word ‘atholhu’ meaning ring-shaped reef or chain of islands formed of coral.
Getting to Maldives
There is no direct flight from Australia. Flights from Australia to the Maldives are operated by Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Etihad Airways, Emirates Airlines, Qatar Airways, AirAsia, China Eastern and SriLankan Airlines. Flights include at least one stopover.
Guests mostly arrive at Male International also known as Velana International Airport located on Hulhule Island in the North Male Atoll. From the airport, you will be transferred by a speedboat or seaplane depending on the location of your resort.
Best Time to Go
The Maldives enjoys a warm tropical climate making it a year-round destination. Temperature ranges between 23° to 32°C. Monsoon season (southwest) is between May to December.
The Maldivian currency is Rufiyaa (MVR) however resort bills and other expenses are usually paid US dollars or credit card. Australian dollars are also accepted.
